“Isis and Osiris” The Earliest Love Story in History

The myth of Isis and Osiris is often regarded as one of the earliest love stories in history, rooted in ancient Egyptian mythology. This myth held significant value in Ancient Egyptian religions, symbolizing themes of love, death, and the eternal cycle of life.

Osiris was a wise and powerful king, all the Egyptian people respected him, but he faced jealousy from his brother Seth due to his influence and role.

Seth planned to kill his brother Osiris by devising a clever ruse to trap him.  He made a chest that fit his brother’s body perfectly and then held a huge party and invited Osiris. After a night of singing, dancing, and feasting, he suggested a game by announcing that the first person to fit perfectly into the chest would be allowed to keep it. And after everyone tried it and no one fit into it because it was made for Osiris. Seth’s friends convinced Osiris to try it, and when he stepped into it it perfectly fit him. Just as Osiris lay down, Seth slammed the lid and sealed it shut. Seth and his friends took the chest down to the Nile River and dumped it in the Nile.

When Isis learned of the tragic death of her husband, she embarked on an unwavering quest to locate the wooden chest that contained his body. Tirelessly, she scoured the land for days until she found it and hid it by the Nile River to perform the proper rituals that would allow him to pass into the Afterlife.

However, fate was not on their side, as Seth discovered the body concealed within the riverbank grass. Determined to ensure that Osiris would never be found again, Seth severed his body into fourteen separate pieces, scattering them far and wide across the vast of Egypt.

The devoted wife, Isis, used her powers of ancient magic and transformed into a huge bird with her eyes honed to a piercing sharpness, she flew above Egypt in search of each scattered piece of her beloved husband. Tirelessly, she was able to reassemble her husband's body, breathing life into him once more through her extraordinary powers. This miraculous reunion bore fruit as Isis, now reunited with her resurrected husband, conceived their son, Horus, marking the triumph of love over adversity.

Osiris, becoming the King of the Afterlife, departs for the world of the dead. Meanwhile, Horus, hidden and protected from Seth, grew to become a formidable protector of the Egyptian people. He reclaimed the throne from his uncle Seth, restoring order and peace to Egypt.
